Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, ocular plastic surgeons, dermatologists, ophthalmologists, and other healthcare providers who incorporate aesthetic procedures in their practice.

Educational Objectives

Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Define and differentiate the onset, duration, dosing, and mechanism of action of injectable neurotoxins.
• Discuss the efficacy and safety of injectable neurotoxins.
• Identify and demonstrate an understanding of facial anatomy, including differences in musculature.
• Identify individualized therapy based on anatomic assessment, muscle mass, ethnicity, and gender.
• Define the optimal injection techniques for using botulinum neurotoxin type A based on the anatomy of the facial muscle groups.

Statement of Need

Increasing physician experience with botulinum toxin (BoNT) injection has resulted in improved outcomes, which in turn have prompted increased patient expectations and the desire for expansion of treatment to a wider variety of areas. The healthcare trend towards patient individualization as a mechanism for outcome optimization has encouraged innovations in injection technique based on anatomy of the muscle groups underlying each area. As new injectable neurotoxins move toward approval, confusion regarding the differences and similarities of available agents with regard to efficacy, dosing, safety, and technique is inevitable.
